Overview

Located at the hinterland of the Pearl River Delta in the south-central part of Guangdong Province, Foshan is a prefecture-level city that borders Guangzhou on the east. The driving time between Foshan and Hong Kong or Macao is about two hours. The city is part of the western side of the Pearl River Delta Economic Zone and the Greater Bay Area.

The city covers an area of around 3,798 square kilometers and has a population of over 9.5 million inhabitants according to the 2020 Chinese census.

The city is famous for its private enterprises and ranked the 14th most competitive city in China in 2021 according to the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

Economic Profile

Foshan’s economy is manufacturing-based. The city’s pillar industries are furniture, equipment manufacturing, chemicals and petrochemicals, electronics, metallurgy and plastic product manufacturing. Other specializations available are new materials, information technology and optical-mechanical-electronic integration.

Foshan is the third largest city in terms of GDP in Guangdong Province. The GDP of Foshan in 2021 reached 1215.7 billion yuan, an increase of 8.3% compared with the previous year, one of the 4th cities in the Guangdong Province to break the 1 trillion yuan threshold. The per capita GDP accounted for 128,000 yuan, up by 12.38%. Foshan generated total fiscal revenue of 80.81 billion yuan, up by 7.8%.

Boasting an international trade value of 600 billion yuan, an increase of 21.7%, the city experienced impressive growth in exports and imports. Exports climbed to 500.74 billion yuan, an increase of 26.3%, while imports rose to 115.33 billion yuan, representing a 37% jump.

Foshan has a few well-established development zones. The Foshan National High-Tech Industrial Development Zone is the national-grade high-tech development zone, the 25th place in the national comprehensive ranking.

On the provincial level, Foshan’s economic landscape is further enriched by a series of prominent zones and parks. These include the Foshan Nanhai Economic Development Zone and the Foshan Chancheng Economic Development Zone, both of which play pivotal roles in regional economic growth. Additionally, the Foshan Nanhai Industrial Park, Foshan Gaoming Cangjiang Industrial Park, Foshan Sanshui Industrial Park, and Foshan Shunde Industrial Park are key contributors to the area’s industrial diversity and development.
