Overview

Located in Guangdong Province and situated right between the cities of two megacities Shenzhen and Guangzhou, Dongguan benefits from a spillover effect from its strategic location.

Dongguan may not be the largest city in the greater bay area, occupying only 2,460 square kilometers, but it still manages to hold third place when it comes to population size. According to the Seventh National Population Census in 2020, the city has a population of 10.47 million inhabitants.

Dongguan has a long history. As early as the Neolithic Period, it was already inhabited by primitive humans. During the Spring-and-Autumn Period and the Warring States Period (770-403BC), Dongguan was home to the Baiyue people. In BC215, Dongguan was controlled by Fanyu County of Nanhai Shire. During the Eastern Han Dynasty (AD25-189), Dongguan Shire was set up in the region. During the Jin Dynasty, Dongguan was governed partly by Panyu and partly by Zengcheng. In AD 331, Bao’an County was set in the territory. In AD 757, Bao’an County was renamed Dongguan. In 1839, the well-known Incineration of Opium during the Opium War took place in Humen Town of Dongguan.

Economic Profile

Dongguan’s pillar industries are machinery, beverage processing, paper making, electronic information, food processing, bag,textiles and garments. Other specializations available are biotechnology, advanced manufacturing, and robots.

In 2021, Dongguan ranked as China’s 17th most Comprehensive Economic Competitiveness city.

In 2021, the city reported a GDP of over 1 trillion yuan (157.7 billion U.S. dollars), up 8.2 percent year on year. This marks that Dongguan becomes the 24th Chinese city whose GDP has surpassed 1 trillion yuan so far. And the per capita GDP accounted for 103,284 yuan (16,009 U.S. dollars), a year-on-year increase of 7.8 percent.

According to Huangpu Customs, Dongguan’s total value of foreign trade hit 1.52 trillion yuan, up 14.6 percent year on year, taking second place in Guangdong Province. The export value accounted for 955.98 billion yuan, an increase of 15.4%, while the import value totaled 568.72 billion yuan, increasing 13.2%.
